Technically he is/was born a normal human being. He was genetically modified by experiments performed on him when he was a young child, so now his body is built for killing monsters and surviving almost anything. He is way older than he actually looks. His hair is very often described as "milk-white". I don't know what kind of milk they drink in this series.
